This autumn I had the joy of volunteering at Globe. Since my employer offers volunteer days, I wanted to use that time to serve an organisation making a meaningful difference. Globe immediately came to mind, not only because I am a member, but because as a registered charity it was eligible for volunteering through my work’s program.
During my time volunteering, I worked in the church office, where I was able to contribute practically while also gaining insight into the daily work life of the church staff. It was really uplifting to see how the team works together: supporting one another, planning thoughtfully, collaborating faithfully (and making plenty of cups of tea!), and welcoming church members who came and went throughout the day. Being part of that rhythm, even briefly, was a joy and deepened my appreciation for the work the staff do.
As is often the case, I found that volunteering didn’t just allow me to serve others, but also had a positive impact on me personally. Through simple conversations and shared moments, I felt blessed and refined. I would encourage anyone with volunteer time available to use it not only to serve others, but also to be open to how God may use those interactions to grow and strengthen you.
As we’re reminded in 1 Peter 4:10–11:
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
This volunteering opportunity also prompted me to get more involved beyond those days, including joining the Christmas Carol Service planning team. What began as a practical act of service became an open door to deeper involvement in church life.
It was a true blessing to use my time and gifts for the glory of God, and I warmly invite others to do the same. You never know how God might use a volunteer day to bless both others and yourself!
