Serving Spotlight: Set up and pack down team

Date Thursday, 10th April 2025

Preached by Ema Colta

While we don’t yet have a building to call our own, every Sunday when we meet, the school’s large assembly room feels just like a church. The chairs are thoughtfully arranged to face both the stage and one another, the banners displaying our core values are up, and the music team has all the necessary audio equipment ready… and even the ping pong tables (yes, they are ping pong tables!) are stored away and covered. It may not be a permanent venue, but it certainly feels like church.

What do we do

Each Sunday, our dedicated setup and pack down team meets at 13:15 at the Globe Office to transport all the necessary equipment to the school. We handle everything—from unloading and setting up before the service. We usually finish this by 14:30. After the service (but not before sharing a meal with the church family), we pack it all down and return it to the office. We are usually done by 18:30.

Testimony

I joined the team informally in 2022, just by showing up and giving a hand when my husband was on the rota. I then became a formal member of the team and stayed here ever since, leading the team in recent months.

The team has grown a lot since then and especially over the last year, it’s been such an encouragement for me to see the team growing steadily and more people stepping in to serve here.

Set up and pack down takes a bit of effort, but no special skills are required —just a willing heart. New people are always welcome to serve this way, and the team is more than happy to guide and support anyone who is learning the process. Another simple, yet powerful act of care shows up when our schedules don’t quite align—yet the team is always keen to step in, to swap or to cover for each other, often even at short notice. It’s such a practical reminder that serving together means looking out for one another too.

How God encourages me through setup/packdown

It is a backstage job that isn’t glamorous, but it also doesn’t have many barriers to it, not even the language ones which I am often much aware of.  But more than that, what I found is that setting up and packing down prepares my heart for meeting and welcoming the church family, and for worshipping in a special way. As we prepare the building for church, our hearts are getting ready to praise God with church family.

Even during the service, we like to stay attentive and ready to spot if someone needs a seat. It’s a small act, but offering a chair feels like a thoughtful way of making people feel seen and welcomed at church, which is a big part of what we are all about!

Along the way, we have opportunities to grow in friendship. The walks between the office and the school are a great chance to catch-up with one another. Plus, once the setup is done, there’s often time to hang out or grab a coffee before the service begins—another opportunity to get to know each other better.

During this time, I sometimes stay in the school to listen to the band rehearsing and I turn that into a more personal time to worship.

So this is us—a team that’s quietly taking care of the practical, behind-the-scenes details that help make Sundays happen as they are now. And we’d love to welcome other same-hearted people to join us!
